The route runs south from Woodmansterne across the Surrey Hills and South Downs before dropping to the Hampshire coast at Portsmouth.

The terrain is rolling through Surrey, with the line threading Westhumble, Dorking and Gomshall before crossing to Guildford and turning south-west toward the Farnham area. South of Bordon the ground rises again through West Liss and Buriton before the route flattens across to Rowlands Castle and the shore at Langstone and Cosham. Roughly a quarter of the route is off road.

Worth knowing before you go

Guildford is the main resupply point in the first half; the stretch between Frith End and West Liss is the longest gap between settlements and warrants carrying food and water. The section around Finchdean and Rowlands Castle has little in the way of services. The route is tagged as road but the off-road proportion means surface conditions after wet weather are worth checking before you leave.
