The route runs north from Derwenlas and Machynlleth on road, crossing coastal ground before the line turns inland through Tywyn and Bryncrug.

A long climb follows, pulling away from the coast toward Dolgellau, then the route threads north through Ganllwyd and Bronaber into the emptier country around Trawsfynydd. The final section runs through Maentwrog, Tan-y-bwlch and Llanfrothen before finishing at Penrhyndeudraeth. Around eighteen percent of the route is off road.

Worth knowing before you go

Machynlleth is the main settlement for resupply in the southern half; after Dolgellau the villages are small and widely spaced through to Maentwrog. The stretch between Bronaber and Trawsfynydd is remote. Pennal, Llanegryn, Ganllwyd and Gellilydan all lie on the line but are small; do not count on them for provisions.
